WHO'S NEXT?

I am hurt.

I am grieving.

Most of all, I’m scared.

Who is it going to be next? Me? You? My sister? Your sister?

I’m writing this with bitter urgency. I need to get this weight off my chest.

Sometime ago, the Minister for Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen revealed that we have over 2million rape cases occurring every year in Nigeria.

Perhaps that doesn’t slap hard until you realize that mathematically, that results in about 5,480 cases every day. EVERY DAY. Only a few – maybe 2% of this number – are reported and only fewer still make it to public limelight.

Simply put, rape is any non-consensual sexual penetration.

When it boils down to the actual causes of this dastardly act, it is very easy to just point accusing fingers at the opposite sex as being the cause of rape.

From late-night visitations, excessive flirtation, skimpy dresses and staying out late, some menfolk have claimed that women, by exhibiting these attributes, are the cause of their own rape.

However, in light of recent realities, this argument is as bereft of sense as Arsenal is bereft of Champions League trophies.

Little girls as young as 10/11 years of age are getting raped and some of our Muslim sisters – some with their hijabs on-  have also been victims of this act. The list goes on and on.

Some women, on their own part, have labeled the menfolk as the cause of rape citing lack of self-control, feeling of entitlement, revenge motives, excess libido and higher physical strength.

This finger-pointing from one gender to another has lingered on for a very long time. It has taken us nowhere.

Enough is enough.

The actual enemy is out there, sipping champagne, singing “Every night, I lie in bed”, watching The Greatest Showman and laughing at the rest of us. We first have to discover who/what that enemy is so we can tackle this menace accordingly.

What are the Actual Causes of Rape?

In my humble opinion (you are entitled to yours too), there are 2 primary causes of rape – psychological factors and governmental/societal inefficiency.

Firstly, no sane person would go through the inhumane process of raping another. I don’t get. At the sound and sight of the lady (or child) begging, kicking, screaming and crying, shouldn’t your penile organ fall like the Nigeria naira?

What sort of pleasure can you derive from an unwilling partner – for devil’s sake? For you to continue and forcefully penetrate through the vagina, anus or mouth and still attain orgasm from this dastardly act is a pointer that something is wrong upstairs. A person doesn’t have to run naked on the streets before we agree that such person isn’t mentally okay.

Like the saying goes – many are mad, only few are roaming.

Secondly, in recent times, governmental inefficiency has multiplied as though its in a financial competition with Jeff Bezos.

We live in societies where one can sexually abuse his/her neighbor and manage to go scot-free.

The governor (if it’s a serious and public case) will order an investigation and say the “perpetrators would be brought to justice”. The IGP, the Commissioner of Police would also release statements along the line of “the Police is committed to locating the criminals and making them face the full force of mkodjdjhg”. We all know the shebang.

3 months down the line, what has - actually – been done? NOTHING. The case would slowly be buried like Abba Kyari (rest his soul).

As for our societies, the story is the same.

We hear of rape cases and the reaction is “ehya, ewoo, this is bad…”, trend it as social media hashtags for 3 days, rain curses on the perpetrators (who have still not been caught, might I add), curse their families and their corpses (“them no go die well”), thank God it wasn't us, bad for a little while and then move right back to dancing Zanku.

Shikena. Drive away from the situation like a Honda End of discussion.

It was Uwa yesterday. Who would it be tomorrow? We can only pray - maybe fast too – and hope that it wouldn’t be us or our loved ones tomorrow. Can't this msunery be tackled once and for all?

Perhaps we should go back to jungle justice.

Comments and thoughts are highly welcome.

That being said, #JusticeForTina and #JusticeForUwa

  1. Apt; Rape has become a menace beyond the reach of the law and respect for sanity/ public good

    1. I'm glad you see my point, sir. Indeed, the situation has gotten way too gory for the law to handle

  2. I resonate deeply with the fact that you mentioned most rapists have psychological problems. Rape is terrible. It makes monsters. It may be a cycle that never ends unless there is an intervention. I watched a movie about two years ago and been the emotional person I am, I cried about it. A young boy was forced to lick his housemaid's pussy. He reported, the housemaid got punished only for her to punish him more by telling him to lick the pussies of all the housemaids in the estate.
We can't really know why people do what they do. We can't sit and hope they'll change. We can only cause change by starting with ourselves and those we love

    1. Indeed. A lot of people approach the issue and try to deal with it on the surface. Unfortunately, rape goes way deeper than that. Both for the rapist and especially for the victim.

  3. Sweet the 16... This is great!

  4. Lucid! All has been said very well. Since there's no befitting punishment from the gov't against the heinous crime, I support your suggestion. Jungle justice will do! We are dying to hear DEATH BY HANGING verdict✊

Indeed, the truth is that the government has failed us. So what do we do? We take laws into our hands. Shikena.

  5. This is a great piece, the narrative that rape is caused by "indecent dressings and late nights" is bereft of every logical reasoning.

  6. Nice write-up. However, in my opinion I know that two wrongs will never make a right. You cannot cure headache by cutting off of the head. Jungle Justice is taking the law into your own hands.
I suggest that inorder to uncover rapist; investigation should taking seriously and be as fast as Usain Bolt.
Serious punishment should be dished out to offenders for others to learn.
Secondly, education is Paramount for any society that wants sane members. People should be educated.
    You've written well. Kudos!

    1. Thank you so much.
However, "serious punishment" have been dished since we were born. They are still being dished out. Where exactly have they taken us?

  7. Perhaps we should go back to jungle justice... But that won't maximally help though.

    1. It would maximally deter however and greatly reduce occurrences of this heinous crime.

  8. Everything said here is absolutely apt!
It's absolutely saddening how the first set of questions proceeding after hearing of a rape case always accuse the victim rather than the perpetrators.
Society needs to unlearn the act of rape apology (it's not about what she was wearing, where she was, what time it was!),
Parents need to educate their sons that they have absolutely no right over a woman's body (enough of the stupid ‘boys will be boys’ nonsense),
The ‘bro code’ needs call out the guys that feel entitled to a having their way (irrespective of the ‘signs’ she's claimed to have been giving...no consent means no green light!),
Women need to stand up for their fellow female (enough of the silence!),
    And most of all,
Justice needs to be served to all those found guilty!
    Enough is enough!!!

There are so many things the society needs to un-learn about rape.
      So many.

  9. A brilliant piece!.. The issue of rape has for long lingered - it still is. However, Jungle justice has never been a solution. The real solution lies in the law - in its harshness - and the drafters of it.

    1. I am 16 years old. Since I was born and now I'm getting old (lol), I've not seen this "real solution" that is lying in the law? Where did she go?

  10. Of course, we will continue praying, and the perpetrators will also keep asking for forgiveness!
The inactive practices of the government should be questioned!
sex education for teenagers should be promoted

We've done enough of that questioning all these years. It has taken us nowhere.

  12. Good write. There are several reasons why folks engage in this heinous act. Some of which you rightly mentioned however, jungle justice isn't the right thing to as a resort. Currently, it's 20+ years of imprisonment but the fact still remains that folks still don't get punished with plethora of cases all over the country today (especially the rich/wealthy ones) would have suggested castration or life imprisonment for the perpetrators but we all know these pattern of punishment is seen as barbaric and uncivilized, talk more of jungle Justice which is worse and more graphic. All said and done, the government has the final say. We all as a society also have a role to play especially as regards the area of 'societal inefficiency' How far have we gone to personally bring about the change we so desire?
